What to Do When Heartburn Turns to HeartFire

Obie Editorial Team

Pregnancy brings with it a host of changes to your body, some of which can be quite uncomfortable, such as heartburn. Addressing heartburn early can prevent it from escalating into severe discomfort. I’ve been through those intense episodes of heartburn that can feel alarmingly like a heart attack, and I want to share strategies that proved effective for me.

Keep Tums or Other Approved Antacid Nearby

During all my pregnancies, I made it a point to have Tums with Calcium within reach – in my purse, in every bathroom, and in the kitchen. I never left the house without them. At the first sign of heartburn, I would chew a few. Though they didn’t always eliminate the pain completely, they definitely mitigated the worst of it. There are several other antacid options available, so consult with your obstetrician if you have a preference or need a recommendation.

Skip Foods that Commonly Cause Heartburn

If you’re like me and love spicy foods, it might be necessary to avoid them during pregnancy. Even the aroma could trigger a surge in stomach acid. Similarly, fatty foods are best avoided as well. While pregnancy might seem like a time to relax dietary restrictions, heartburn can force you to be more mindful of your food choices. Avoiding fast food and certain restaurant dishes could be crucial steps in managing discomfort.

Eat a Little a Lot of Times

Sometimes hunger can strike with intense urgency during pregnancy, leading to overeating, which can exacerbate heartburn. Opt for smaller, more frequent meals to stay nourished and satisfied without overloading your stomach. This approach can significantly reduce the likelihood of heartburn episodes.
