Your baby

Your baby is making significant strides in growth! By the 14th week, the fetus can measure up to 3 ½ inches in length and weigh up to 2 ounces. Just consider the progress since week 11, when the fetus was only ½ ounce. During this phase, an ultrasound will reveal crucial developments such as chest movement, which signifies practice for breathing.

You'll also notice that the hands and feet are moving, mostly as reflex actions. All the nutrients, vitamins, and calories your baby needs are sourced from the placenta at this stage.

Your body

As you transition into the 14th week, you might experience constipation. Pregnancy hormones that relax abdominal muscles to accommodate uterine growth also affect your bowel muscles. To ease this, make it a point to drink plenty of water and include high-fiber foods in your diet.

Also, the increased blood volume your body produces may start to manifest, particularly in your breasts where blood vessels can become more visible. These blue veins might not be visually appealing to everyone, but they are a natural part of pregnancy and may persist for its duration or even beyond.

At the prenatal visit

During this period, a Doppler device is often employed to listen to your baby's heartbeat. As your baby grows, the heartbeat will become louder and more distinct. You can request to hear it anytime you're at your prenatal visit, creating a special moment of connection with your growing baby. In rare cases where the heartbeat isn't detected with a Doppler, an ultrasound can confirm the heart rate.

Your partner

It's essential to differentiate between needs and wants, especially when preparing for a new baby. Contrary to marketing messages, the actual necessities for your baby are pretty budget-friendly. Together, take the time to budget and develop a financial plan for baby-related expenses. This will help alleviate financial stress and keep both of you focused on what truly matters.

Tips for this week
